Barry Lowan, a seemingly normal, bright, 15-year-old high-school student in south Texas, discovers he is immortal after a car accident on the way to an early morning religious class that kills his best friend and his best friend's mother. Barry tries to discover what his immortality means for him, trying to juggle his desire to do something meaningful with the craziness of life as a high school student and the trauma from the death of his best friend. After saving a girl around his age, Charley, from a house fire, Barry decides to use his immortality to try to be a hero, trying multiple methods including volunteering with the fire department, at a hospital, and finally delivering meals to unhoused veterans. But because he has to keep his immortality a secret from those closest to him, he still has to keep up with his schooling, including a semester-long engineering design project and an Academic Decathlon competition.
