Ideals and the ordinary

This book provokes consideration of one's own journey through life and how it has been shaped by the generations preceding it. Johnson examines what we as a culture have lost, what is better left behind, what we might regain and what we must reinvent. He is especially trenchant in considering the problems caused by ideals and how to ground ourselves in ordinary reality. This book provides an antidote for an out-of-balance culture.

Everyday Hopes, Utopian Dreams: Refections on American Ideals

I particularly enjoyed the authors vivid descriptions of his life growing up in the Sacramento valley. They were complete with his physical senses and his perceptions of the hopes, dreams and the inner turmoils of his self, his families and the society in general. Provacative.
