This book of devotions is about taking ordinary life situations and finding God in the middle. At the close of each devotional story, the author adds a Reality Check . . . a statement or question(s)... This description may be from another edition of this product.
If you like to laugh or see the craziness of life while gaining a new insight, you'll love Barb Boswell's Every Time I Turn Around, I Bump into God! The author writes with comic flair, a skillful way of weaving the ordinary into a lesson, and with a candor anyone can relate to. Reading this book, I found myself saying, "Yup, been there done (or felt) that!" The Reality Check, at the close of each chapter, made for a helpful, introspective review. Each chapter also closed with a short prayer which often put into words what I thought and felt. This could be a terrific devotional book. SMACK! I bumped into God, too!

God has given Barb Boswell an amazing talent for writing with insight and humor. A talent she has used to glorify Him and witness to her readers through this little gem of a book.Every Time I Turn Around, I Bump into God is actually a compilation of 66 of Barb Boswell's personal essays divided into as many chapters, in which she offers her own experiences and what she learned from each of them that brought her closer to God. The most amazing thing is that while none of us have the same experiences, the similarities are such we can relate to each and every one...some more than others. Barb's style isn't preachy or condescending. Quite the contrary, she is gracious and humble as she points out her own weaknesses in an effort to help us see our own. The Reality Checks at the end of each chapter asking us to take a look at our own behavior and compare it to that of God's will were less like a slap in the face and more like a gentle nudge to remind us where our focus should be.While I agree that this book might be especially relevant to those who have cancer, have had a cancer scare or are cancer survivors, I think it is just as relevant to those of us who are afflicted with a disease that may be even more debilitating...sin. Barb's essays touch base with sins that we are all guilty of: pride, unforgiveness, intolerance, impatience, failure to witness, selfishness, bitterness, blame and judgment. Her essays remind us to let go of sinful behavior and allow God to nourish our spirit as we go to Him with confession following the enlightenment Barb offers in this fulfilling book of spiritual renewal.

In an Erma Bombeck-like style, Barb Boswell gives us a glimpse into her life--warts and all. Her short essays end with a poignant lesson she learned from each experience. Just about the time you're belly-laughing or crying your way through one of her anecdotes, you get "hit over the head" (in the gentlest sense, of course) by the lesson God taught her in it. Some of her stories relate to her breast cancer diagnosis, surgery and treatment. Great gift book for those who have gone through, or are going through, that scenario. But the book is really for a wider audience as well. You'll find yourself in at least one of the stories and lessons learned in this book. Short chapters make it easy reading.
