T.X. is, undeniably, a hero but, like all highly burnished objects, he is easily tarnished, an affluent but lonely man, conflicted by the feelings he still has for his ex-wife, TV news personality Avery Sims. Years ago, a tragic shooting in the kitchen of their home left Avery's son Trevor dead. Only she and T.X. know the truth of what happened and that truth separates them. Despite that, yearly, on his birthday, T.X. accepts and passively responds to a text from Avery blaming him for Trevor's death, a willing submission that only hints at the inner turmoil he struggles to suppress. Desperate for a woman in his life, he and Shantene immediately begin a May/December love affair that T.X. believes is his salvation but which results, after only eight days, in a bitter reckoning. Told in the first person by T.X. with raw and uncharacteristically honest input from Shantene, a woman who is both far more and far less than she seems and who lives her life by the credo, "It's not a lie if the truth is nobody's damn business" and from Avery, whose love for T.X. endures, a truth that weighs on her as much as the mental demons that constantly threaten to overwhelm her. Supporting the story are T.X.'s best friend Rev, an unrepentant Seventies revolutionary and Marjorie, Rev's wife, a child of the Main Line, her husband's former co-conspirator, bank robbery and murder accomplice, each of whom have lies they can never reveal.
