Jerk. Creep. Dim-wit. These are a few of the words my children would have asked about if I had let them read this book first. It is an education in name-calling and other put-downs. Usually the illustrations in Joy Berry books have a saucy attitude that I can discuss or edit, but the value of the main text still makes them worthwhile. This book is an exception. I'd like to get through the book with my child without also having to explain "Mud wrestling roller derby...No brain.. Useless... Funny ears... Worm." I understand the language many children hear is far worse. And it is so tempting to earn quick rapport and credibility with an audience of children by appealing to the humor in these things. But we don't have to appeal to, demonstrate, or even show understanding of these rude and undesirable habits in order to teach good habits. We simply need to show what is right and good. Like so much of the well-intentioned and harmful social prescriptions offered in education, this book offers the cure for the disease it spreads.
