Ever The Hero

By Darby Harn

What happens when you can't pay your superhero bill?

Kit Baldwin is just trying to get by.

Rent is due. Food would be nice. A girlfriend, maybe. When she stumbles upon a crashed alien ship's power source, she gets more than she ever bargained for.

Instead of cashing it in immediately, Kit tries to harness the artifact's power to help someone else. In the process, Kit transforms forever into a woman of cosmic power. Now she can pay more than her bills; she can satisfy a debt the city has borne for decades.

Cosmic radiation from the ship gave some superhuman powers, which the Empowered sell for a fee. Bankrupt, the city can no longer afford them, and the Empowered withhold their services. Bank robberies. House fires. Killer asteroids. It doesn't matter. Pay, or get nothing.

The Empowered fight Kit to keep her gifts to herself. She should. The more she uses her power, the more she loses herself to it. But the city needs her. And if she can help someone, she will, even if the cost is greater than she can pay.
