Mixed Feelings on 'Even Vampires Get the Blues' by Katie MacAlister

In "Even Vampires Get the Blues," Paen Scott, a soulless dark one, faces a dire situation. His mother's soul is at stake, and he must find the Jilin God relic in 5 days to repay a debt to a demon. Enter Samantha Cosse, a skilled half-elf investigator recently expelled from the Order of Diviners. As Sam’s client, their connection goes beyond the professional, with Sam convinced she's Paen's Beloved whether he wants one or not. 1. **Plot and Storytelling:** 3/5, this Dark Ones novel didn't top my favorites list. While the story offered entertainment and minor twists, the ending lacked coherence without the necessary epilogue. I wished for heightened tension and more utilization of side characters to enhance the overall narrative. 2. **Characterization:** 3/5, the characters were generally well-crafted, but side characters needed more development. Paen's redemption lacked the dramatic flair I anticipated, although I appreciated Sam's authentic attributes—her strength, flaws, and genuine portrayal. 3. **Writing Style:** 4/5, MacAlister demonstrated a commendable writing style that maintained a smooth flow. The book's length was just right, and overall, I found the writing enjoyable. 4. **Originality:** 4/5, the story's uniqueness kept me guessing. However, it didn't captivate me as intensely as some of MacAlister's other works, leaving room for improvement in the enthrallment factor. 5. **Emotional Impact and Resolution:** 3.5/5, being the fourth in the Dark One series, this book adhered to the series' basic premise. However, it lacked the emotional resonance and tension present in MacAlister's other works. The dependence on an epilogue for a meaningful ending deducted points, as a book should ideally feel complete without additional chapters. 6. **Smut:** 4/5, the spice in romantic scenes was enjoyable, with telepathic elements adding an entertaining twist. It left me intrigued, pondering how such elements would translate into my own reality. 7. **Audiobook** 5/5, I enjoyed this narrator. I felt she conveyed the characters as well and told a great story. Overall score: 3.78/7 (or about 3/5) If you enjoyed "Even Vampires Get the Blues" by Katie MacAlister, you might also like Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse series) by Charlaine Harris or A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy) by Deborah Harkness. These recommendations offer a mix of paranormal romance, supernatural elements, and strong character dynamics, similar to the themes found in "Even Vampires Get the Blues."

Katie Macalister does it again!!!

I am a little behind on my reading but I finally got to this this book. I enjoyed the store very much. Like the other books from Katie Macalister this one was funny and fun to read. I enjoyed Paen and Sam's relationship which grows to love throughout the book. Samantha Cosse is an investigator. Paen is a Dark One, a vampire, without a soul. Sam is first hired to find a manuscript then Paen hires her to find a statue that would save his mother's soul. Both Sam and Paen not knowing that the two are connected. This book is fast paced and full of action, pain, and of course, love. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good read.

One of her best

Katie MacAllister has been described as laugh out loud funny. I thought that was ridiculous because no book has ever made me laugh aloud. I started with her dragon series and found myself laughing and could not wait until I could find another series of hers. I find these "Dark One" books, just as delightful as the dragon series. I have read each of her books in a 24 hour period because I cannot put them down.

I loved it

Ever since Men in Kilts (and if you haven't read it, you haven't lived), I've had a huge crush on Katie MacAlister. Her characters are funny, strong, believable, and get in some of the most ridiculous situations. This book follows the same tradition, and I liked it more than most of her other Dark Ones/Vampire stories. There was a little bit of darkness in this, but so much quirky fun that I never got too scared. I felt like this was a more substantial story, and I loved Paen and his hilarious half sun elf soul mate.

Great Book, A Must Read!

I don't understand why some people were dissapointed with this book. It was great. I laughed all the way through it. I read this book in a day. The story was well writen and the characters likable. The secondary characters were great also. Intimate scenes were awesome. They storyline was different from the last two when dealing with the whole how to become a "beloved" and gaining your soul back, which was interesting in my opinion. The only thing I didn't like was that we didn't get any of the former characters (save that guardian). I would have liked to know how they were getting on. I can't wait for the next book. I'm seriously put out because I don't have more from this series to read! :(

Fantasy Romance

Katie Macalister has given us another zany, outrageous, romantic romp. If you read her you know what to expect from her novels, a mixture of zany characters, outrageous situations, and a great romance. Mostly Fun Fun Fun! And this one does not let us down, I loved the attack of the killer butterflys, the self denying fairy, the cute monkey, and abunch of scottish ghosts, who want a real chance to swing a sword. Not to mention our heroine, a half-elf investigator and a Dark One, (vampire). Samantha Cosse is now an investigator, the half-elf has left diviners school and opened an agency with her cousin Clair, a fairy, Who thinks she is human. She works as a lingure model. Paen is a Dark One, a vampire, without a soul. Only finding his Beloved can get him a soul. However he thinks he is fine and doesn't see the need to tie himself to a woman he has never met. Where is the benefit to him, she gets immortality and he gets bonded to her for eternity. SAm is hired by one person to find a lost book. Then Paen hires her to find a lost or stolen statue. Wouldn't you know it both items are on the want list of two different Gods. The action is fast and the laughs are plentiful. Sam and Paen manage to stumble from one crisis to another followed shortly by his brother Finn and Clair. For a laugh and a good time follow along with this book. I loved it. It reminded me somewhat of her Aisling Grey novels.
