In my expreience, historical fiction can be tedious and tough to follow, but Eva's Secret is quite a departure from that stereotype. Eva's Secret is an intricately woven tale that keeps the reader turning the pages. It's a story that is relevant to today's reader while staying true to its historical and geographic roots. From the very beginning, I found myself lost in the word pictures, walking through Eva's experiences alongside her and, of course, curious to find out her secret. One thing I love about Eva is her naive nature. While some may find her too sweet, I could completely identify with this girl who believes what her heart wants her to see, even when circumstances would suggest she shouldn't. She finds herself at a difficult crossroad where her innocence and life experiences have collided, with danger and mystery at every turn. She places her hope in her brother, who can't quite match up to the rose-colored image Eva has of him. As she struggles with the guilt and shame of her past and tries to find comfort through her Christian faith, Eva looks to her mother as a role model for faith, and completely misses the fact that her own mother is Jewish - in the middle of the Spanish Inquisition, no less. And when she sees the reality and horror of the acts done by the church during this time, Eva has to decide what she really believes. She has watched her world fall apart, and as she tries to pick up the pieces we get to see glimpses of her past that help us understand where she is now. In spite of the emotional struggle Eva is facing, the book provides a generous dose of humor to balance the drama. I found myself laughing out loud in a couple of places, and I had a hard time putting the book down. For me it was a great introduction to this author's work, and I can hardly wait to pick up the next book (Inca's Ransom) to follow Eva on the next part of her journey.

This is a great book with a gripping plot set in (a very well researched)renaissance era Granada after the spanish conquest. The author makes excelent use of the city's uneasy atmosphere and social and religous tension to pull you into her story and make you belive.
Captivating from the start

This book hooked me from the very first pages. I loved the character development, the plot twists, and the way the author weaves the story with historical facts. An added bonus is the author's quirky sense of humor, as well as her use of animal characters as important story elements. I am ordinarily a fast reader, but this book wouldn't allow me to read it quickly, which I loved! I found myself believing in the characters and their problems. I couldn't wait to start the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of historical fiction. You won't be disappointed.
