Before WWII breaks out, Nanjing (Nanking) became one of the first locations attacked. Amidst the chaos, a family of four find themselves entangled in danger. They take their chances and successfully flee. However, when the rubble finally settles, they find themselves returning home.

Horrid sights of post-war trauma greet the family. As Sui, the daughter of the house, and her fianc attempt to readjust to life in the city, they take on jobs as teachers. In a place of restlessness and hunger, Sui faces challenge after challenge until she is met with one of the hardest in her life.

She comes to realize that humanity stretches beyond family by blood.
