This is an ideal introduction to moral philosophy for beginning students and general readers, dealing with the philosophical theories which often lie behind everyday opinions and inviting the reader to examine those theories thoroughly. Using numerous examples and diagrams, Professor Bond guides the reader through the key problems of theoretical ethics seeking to outline a substantial view of morality in universal practical reason, he concludes in an attempt to show that a viable universal morality can only relate to the thriving, flourishing or well-being of individuals in a community.
E.J. Bond should be celebrated for being able to make theoretical ethics as interesting as has been done in this book. If you are looking for a good text book that you would actually read, this would work well, however if you are looking for a plethera of ethical models and theories, this is not the place to turn. Bond excelently lays out the logical path to serving the greater good, but every model presented is quickly knocked down hardly giving the reader a chance to digest the information. Another weakness of this book is that Bond is trying to provide evidence for his stances on morality instead of presenting an unbiased report on each ethical model. If you think everyone should serve the common good and you have a logical step-by-step brain you will enjoy this book. However if you want to think about ethics and how they pertain to you, keep looking.
