This book is a collection of unique medical adventures and misadventures which pose numerous ethical questions. The cases are largely true, but names and places have been changed to support anonymity. Each case history stands alone and can be used for teaching and study as individual cases. The cases feature evolving conflicts between religious mores, political obduracy, intense human desire and need, and the limitation of medical practice. The variety of ethical dilemmas are presented in narrative, simply and without over-elaboration; so have many good endings, glimpses of humanity, and more than a sprinkling of serendipity. Holistic medical practice demands that the patient's total life circumstances are considered as part of both the problem, and the solution. This must be the foundation of guiding ethical principle in the practice of medicine.
