"A thrilling fantasy set in a unique world. You won't be able to turn the pages fast enough."--Cassandra Clare, #1 New York Times bestselling author"Rich, complex, and tough--this is epic fantasy that will appeal to everyone."--Lee Child, #1 New York Times bestselling author

With echoes of Mistborn and She Who Became the Sun, Eternity's Blade is an action-packed fantasy debut chronicling an assassin's rise to power in a world of immortals.

In the secluded paradise of the Valley, life is eternal. Guarded by unbreachable mists and ruled by a reclusive Emperor, this floating world of salt and lilies brims with beauty, ritual, and endless rebirth.

And then prince Soh'shoro discovers his power to kill.

Stolen from the courts, trained in martial and magical arts by enigmatic warrior monks, Soh'shoro is reborn as an assassin, ready to defend against the mythical Outside. But echoes of his lost mother and the ethereal allure of a doomed princess lead him on a path to discover the Valley's dark secrets ...

Now, as war dawns, Soh'shoro must decide: Is paradise worth protecting? Or must Eternity itself be ended once and for all?

A decaying eternity

First off props to the narrator for being the one to pronounce all the names that sounded so natural in the audiobook which would have totally thrown me off if I read this book instead. Instead I got to enjoy this fascinating dark world of a decaying eternity, trapped in a valley surrounded by death mists. While everyone else is reborn in this never-ending eternity powered by the Emperor, Sho’Shuro is alone in is uniqueness of being able to kill and stop the rebirths. Cue the mad monk that steals him to make him an assassin for his own schemes that have been a lifetime in the making. You get political machinations with the murders, plus a nice tinge of horror with the princess (not sure what Sho’Shuro sees in her, but it is admirable that he loves her rot and all!) and the emperor on his throne, requiring sacrifices to continue the mists and also the mysterious beings that made the valley possible. It felt like a rich world, lots of details that paint a picture of beauty and decay (much like the princess) and a story that drew me in to see what Sho’Shuro would do with his power to end eternity or save it. His story certainly was intriguing as he learns the truth of the valley and the outside world and the struggles as a prince to decides what he stands for amid all the other inhabitants of his land. I really wouldn't mind reading a prequel to this novel because the beings that created that valley were intriguing and I would love to know their story of ascension to being masters of time itself. The narrator, Brian Nishii, did a wonderful job of bringing this world to life and all the characters. I think the author wrote a very strong debut and I look forward to seeing what he will come up with next, be it related to this world, or some other new horizon!
