George, a frustrated twenty-year-old man flees from his obligations, the daily struggle for survival in Athens and his impeding drafting in the army. Allured by the notion that life is easier in the country, he abandons everything and starts searching for love and a purpose in the barren semi-deserted villages of the plateaus of Arcadia.
Giota, an unwary fourteen-year-old girl elopes with a much older itinerant merchant in a desperate effort to escape from her dreary village life and her molesting father. A widow at 25 she lives with scanty means, locked in time and trapped in the harsh wilderness of the high plains of Arcadia from which she has been seeking a way out for years.
