ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

"The minimum certainties necessary to utter Camus' three words, 'this has happened, ' have been fading before our eyes for several years. Is it possible to know when what we are now experiencing began?"

In recent years, Juan Gabriel V squez has offered an incisive and critical view of the events that have disrupted our society and our times in his columns for El Pa s. This volume brings together a selection of those texts, in which he not only analyzes the facts, but also ventures into a profound reflection on the role of citizens in the construction of truth and collective memory, as well as pointing out that art is not a luxury, but a necessity. Thus, with complete lucidity, V squez reminds us of the importance of recognizing, observing, and documenting reality.

"I began writing opinion columns in mid-2007," says the author in the prologue. "In these nineteen turbulent years, the craft of looking at the world from the pages of a newspaper has changed more than anyone could have predicted: journalism has changed, of course; what we mean when we say 'opinion' has changed. Above all, our working materials have changed: the reality in which we operate and our ability to pass judgment on it. I have often said that there are no two more opposite ways of describing the world than those of the novelist and the newspaper columnist, for one writes from uncertainty (writes to discover) and the other, on the contrary, writes from certainty and wants to share it (writes to convince). Today I would add that the pieces in this book certainly sought to convince, but that the book now published seeks to converse and understand."
