Essential Elements of Power Transmission Systems

By Mark Goodwin

Elements of Power Transmission System is an indispensable technical guide meticulously addressing the foundational elements crucial for designing, implementing, and maintaining mechanical power transmission systems. This comprehensive resource begins by establishing essential drafting conventions, detailing limit standards for precision manufacturing, various mechanical fits, and fundamental geometric constructions vital for accurate technical drawing. The text then transitions to an exhaustive examination of mechanical fastenings, providing critical specifications for screws, bolts, rivets, and keys. This section covers diverse types, head styles, thread standards (including US, Whitworth, SAE, Metric), material properties, and their respective dimensional data and applications, from standard to specialized industrial fasteners. Finally, the book delves into core power transmission components, offering detailed insights into shafting properties, a wide array of couplings and clutches, and bearing specifications with lubrication methods. It further explores pulley types and materials, various belting and rope drive systems, and an extensive range of gears\u2014spur, bevel, miter, worm, helical, and herringbone\u2014outlining their terminology, tooth forms, material selection, horsepower calculations, and practical design guidelines. This manual serves as an authoritative reference, equipping engineers and technicians with the precise data and knowledge required for optimal mechanical design and production.
