Yet such is the pride and presumption of man, that ecclesiastical history exhibits an almost con tinned propensity among men, to intermeddle with the ordinances of God; so much had this prevailed among the Jews, that the traditions of the elders, had almost supplanted the laws of God; so that it was said of them, In vain they do worship me teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. And in the christian church, it is well known, that the mystery of iniquity soon began to work, that the Church was subject to Christ was quickly for gotten; and will worship, and'the plea of expedi ency, soon produced the utmost diversity of opinion and practice, instead of that unity of judgment and conduct, which might have been expected to result from; allegiance to the King of Saints, and con formity to the precepts and example of his word. Every word of God is pure, add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee and thou be found a liar.-prov. Xxx. 5. 6.
