This dissertation explores the intersections of technical medical knowledge and lay knowledge of medicine in fictional prose writings in the genre of the ancient Greco-Roman romance novel. Divertido!

Como todos los demas han dicho, este libro es divertidisimo. Es un libro lleno de temas tristes que a la vez lleva la magia del humor. Te encontraras riendo en plena calle cuando de repente piensas en las locuras que hizo Esperanza. La imagen final...nunca la voy a olvidar.

Las novelas tienen dosis de uno u otro elemento, las más acertadas combinan agilmente los dos, pero muy pocas, como "Santitos" de Escandón, logran llevarnos al epicentro de la creación, el molcajete de la lengua donde las palabras rozan, vibran, chocan, saltan y se entremezclan. La historia es sencilla. Una joven madre y viuda recibe la noticia de que su hija única de 13 años ha fallecido en el hospital. Por razones oficiales no se le concede destapar el féretro y bajo la duda, crece en ella el sentimiento de que su hija Blanca no murió sino que fue vendida a una red de abusadores de menores. La primera pista la encuentra en el horno de su casa, cuando San Judas Tadeo a través de la mugre de la ventanita, le comunica que su hija no está muerta. A fin de encontrarla, Esperanza comienza un largo recorrido por los prostíbulos limpiando habitaciones, primero en el burdel del lugar, para continuar su búqueda acompañada de sus santos de madera en la "casa" más elegante de Tijuana y pasar al final a trabajar a Los Angeles, en un local de erotismo barato donde los clientes anónimos espían desde un telescopio los gestos íntimos de las ocupantes. Al acudir a un combate de lucha libre, Esperanza encuentra a su "ángel" con cuerpo de luchador y con quien revivirá un amor pleno visceral y vibrante. Sin embargo, su amor maternal le obligará a dejar subitamente la ciudad al revelársele que la respuesta a su búsqueda estaba en el lugar de origen: su pueblo, su casa, su horno. La novela de Escandón tiene la fuerza de ser una proyección contemporánea de "La Celestina" de Rojas. Si el amor loco y la magia de la prostituta Celestina conducen a la muerte de la hija bien amada y a una plegaria deseperada de su padre, en "Santitos" es el amor hacia la hija muerta o desaparecida que conducen a la madre a través de los prostíbulos a un canto pleno a la vida. En esas líneas, a modo de surcos, Escandón va frotando con la uña hasta llegar al fondo del alma o soplo de la vida, haciendo invocar a su personaje central, no a los diablos del bachiller Rojas --pálida imagen hoy de nuestra realidad cotidianana-- sino a los ángeles y querubines carcomidos por el tiempo y relegados a objeto baratija de la cultura popular. El personaje central de "Santitos", por su auténtica naturalidad y fuerza tiene la dimensión de una diosa de la tierra. A Colorful, Magical Tale of Love with a Mexican Soul

We chose this book for our book group and everyone just loved it. From the very first chapter it grabbed our imaginations, but more importantly, Esperanza grabbed our hearts. She was such a charming character, full of innocence and yet wise beyond her years. The author painted such vivid pictures with words and you could almost feel the heat of the locations, hear the lilt of Spanish being spoken. I personally hated to finish the book because I had grown to love the unfolding of Esperanza's journey - both literally and figuratively. What delightful surprises and twists of fate! Maria Amparo Escandon is such an original and compassionate writer who captured the true spirit of her character, Esperanza. I found myself laughing, even while feeling sad. It was probably the most enjoyable book I've read in years. Our book group discussion was so animated and we had trouble ending the conversation about the story, the characters and how close we felt to Esperanza. We are praying (to Esperanza's saints) that Senora Escandon will treat us to another book very soon!

Excellent writing by a Latina but a book for all audiences

This was one of those books that I just could not put down.Being a latino it brought back many memories of my mother,a devoted Catholic,and her Saints.When my mother died I kept her Saints and packed them in a box when we moved to our new house.what an excellent job by Ms. Escandon in describing the main character,Esperanza.Not to keen in the ways of the world but certainly not lacking in common sense and wholeheartedly devoted to her only child. This was a refreshing and authentic book unlike so many of the books today that all seem to come from the same brain factory.It should appeal to all audiences.

Escandon completely captivates me!

This is an incredibly amazing piece of work! Full of surprizes! Amazing! Escandon is a master of knowing exactly which words to use to create atmosphere or to make a description. Esperanza is so preposterous (in some ways) that she is completely believable. This is a picaresque work in a modern setting. Simply a masterpiece in my opinion. Easy access. Easy reading. Lots of fun! And yet there is depth. A very fine piece of work. This novel compares favorably to Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima. It will also no doubt be compared with Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate. I have been completely taken in by the world that Escandon has created. What stays with me is the atmosphere of this world. It is a novel that gets me to laugh and to cry. I am deeply moved by the world that Escandon has created. I look forward also to seeing the movie version. May Maria Amparo Escandon write many more novels in years to come!
