"It's good to be free! Thank God!" - the Anne Franke of Eastern Europe

INTRODUCTION: This is the life story of Judy Wurmbrand, the daughter-in-law of pastor Richard Wurmbrand - known as "the apostle to the Communist world." This story is a moving story that starts with Judy's father's escape from a Jewish concentration camp in the Roumanian-Ukranian border region. Judy's Jewish birthname is Frida, and this book is "the greater miracle of my becoming Judy, and finding my true purpose in life." (pg. 17) AUTHOR: Born Frida, to a Romanian Jewish couple, she later takes the name of Judy (in the free land of Israel) and marries the only son of Richard and Sabine Wurmbrand. "Escape from the Grip" is as much about her life story as about her journey in life towards finding her purpose in life. CONTENT: In harsh conditions of WWII era, where "in such conditions friendship was a scarce commodity" a Herman and Jenny (Judy's parents) "fell in love" and married. The story flows easily and I could not but feel that this is the Wurmbrands' "Anne Frank - the Diary of a Young Girl" book. Life in Communist Roumania was harsh, but having subchapters with titles such as "black market aspirins", "a passport to jail" "necessity ... the best teacher", and "Jewish and proud of it" made the read captivating. Also the jokes and insights into life as a Jew in Communist Roumania, in Israel made for some amuzing and fascinating read. Some excerpts: * "The words of Communist songs simply did not reflect the reality of Communist life around me." * "Communism, I began to understand, twists and misues everything to fit its theories and serve its propaganda, while punishing every non-conformist." * "... the state takes everything from everybody. This is termed 'the fulfilment of the lofty ideal of socialism.' " * pg.31 tells a political joke where the Minister of Agriculture is asked to "arrange for cows to produce five to ten calves." When he protests to the Prime Minister's request because such productivity is "against all the laws of nature!" he is accussed of being "guilty of 'sabotage'!" and is being led away to prison. * pg.53 tells a Jewish political joke ... "A joke went the rounds about a Jewish Communist who addressed such a meeting. 'Don't go to Israel,' he insisted. 'It is a country of capitalists who are boupnd to exploit you. You go to buy a sack of onions and they might cheat you, giving you a sack of oranges instead. Keep right away from Israel.' And beating his breast he finished with, 'Here is happiness! Here is freedome! Here is joy!' After the meeting a friend told him, 'You were really good. You spoke marvellously. You're a born leader, but why did you beat your breast continually as you told us, "Here is freedom"?' The speaker answered, 'I was beating the pocket where I keep my passport - with my visa for Israel.' " * "I was already acting as Communism wants its youth to act: never sure what is right and wrong." (pg.35) * "Communism thinks paranoiacally, creates paranoids, and manipulates them to its own advan
