On September 14, 1862, the were 14,000 Federal soldiers at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, under the command of Colonel Dixon S. Miles. They were surrounded by 23,000 Confederate soldiers under the command of Major-General Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson force, in what would be known as the Siege at Harpers Ferry. Sharing in the Federal garrison's fate were 1,600 cavalrymen, who refused to surrender, but instead were willing to make an escape attempt.
