Book Overview

"Erring is a thoughtful, often brilliant attempt to describe and enact what remains of (and for) theology in the wake of deconstruction. Drawing on Hegel, Nietzsche, Derrida, and others, Mark Taylor extends-and goes well beyond-pioneering efforts. . . . The result is a major book, comprehensive and well-informed."-G. One of the most important theological texts of the 20th century

It is perhaps easy, after finishing Mark C. Taylor's Erring, to feel underwhelmed. Taylor's text might only seem to be an interesting thought experiment, and its lack of even implicit prescriptions may lead those who are used to reading pop psychiatry which masquerades as "serious" theology to discount it. That would be a mistake. This is a book for people who have stopped looking to theology for answers. There are no answers in Erring, and for that reason it is one of the few texts which adequately and honestly reflects the situation that we are now in, after the death of God. This book isn't about God. God is dead. It's about theology. Theology is a game, a hermeneutical game. If you can fathom that distinction this book will be for you a true "shaking of the foundations". Erring spells out more succinctly the postmodern status of theology...the space which theology truly inhabits today...than any other book I know of. It's a "masterpiece".

Question Truth

Mark Taylor's book, "Erring: A Postmodern A/theology," will challenge it's reader and entice them to enter his web of thought. Personally, I owe much of my own personal "erring" to this book. This read will help to examine as well as deal with the questions many of us can not seem to shake. Is their really a Judeo/Xian God? Understanding the dialectic between man and himself and his world is imperative if western culture is to proceed into a postmodern world of pluralism and omnicentrism. make no mistake, if you posess strong reading ability, this book will open your mind or return you to that experience few of us have attained. Err in this direction and Mark will surely send you erring or wandering in a world never before experienced or forgotten
