In the years leading up to the country's military coup in 1973, Robert travels to Chile to collect medicinal plants for a small business that he and his partners are starting up. During one of forays into the Lonquimay Valley, he meets Rosa, the daughter of a Chilean machi, or medicinal plant shaman. They have a child, Paulina, and eventually fall in love. In this story, which actually begins over 14,000 years ago, Robert and Rosa's family endure hardships and adventure before, during, and after the military coup that deposes President Allende. This novel is more than just fiction. It delivers to readers a glimpse at Chilean history, it's customs and music, and the actual science of medicinal plants. Each chapter is punctuated with illustrations of plants, all drawn by the author, as well as charts and diagrams to help explain the complex scientific processes involved with what Robert, and, later, Paulina are working on. It is truly a unique book.
