Highly recommended.

Mary Baxter wrote a very realistic story of a woman who escaped from an abusive husband. During thirty-four years of marriage, Joe Loomis had belittled Julia, heaping verbal abuse on her until she felt that she had no value outside of keeping his house, doing his laundry, and cooking his meals. Even for those efforts, she received nothing but scorn. When she mentioned divorce, Joe laughed and then threatened. Mary did a marvelous job of describing Julia's feelings throughout her life with Joe: first, her hopelessness, then the excitement and thrill of actually escaping, and, after that, the ambivalance. One minute, Julia was exhilarated; the next minute she was filled with doubts and misgivings and depression. Mary also drew a perfect picture of Joe through his words and actions, depicting him as the thoughtless, egotistical bully Julia couldn't stand one more moment! I hope Mary's story will encourage other women who are longing to escape miserable marriages. Although the story is romantic fiction, I feel the events could really happen in real life, and every Julia can find happiness in new relationships. I was especially happy to read a book written as well as this one, with good sentence structure and perfect grammar. Mary's book is inspirational and enjoyable; I highly recommend it.

A New Genre

Mary Baxter has created a new genre -- a Romance for the 55+ crowd. It's a light and fun read to follow Mrs. Loomis' flight from a grumpy, carping husband, through the perils of self-sufficiency, into new romance and a final friendly break with a regretful husband. Mrs. Loomis will give lots of unhappy wives pause for thought and reason for hope.

"Erasing Mrs. Loomis" by Mary K. Baxter

"Erasing Mrs. Loomis" is an adventure / suspense story of sorts, but certainly is far removed from a Schwarzenegger movie or even "Romancing the Stone". Frankly, it's more of a "chick" book than a "guy thing", but the plot and suspense develop quickly, making it interesting to a fairly wide audience. In spite of the speed at which action starts, character development is pretty thorough, so the book has a sense of depth to it and in the end the action and plot are really all about character. For those with an intellectual / social analysis bent, the book is interesting in part because it portrays with some feeling a segment of society that doesn't get much attention. The heroine is neither young nor terribly old, very ordinary really, but very desperate for her own reasons.FYI, the author, Mary K. Baxter, is NOT the same Mary K. Baxter who is associated with books such as "A Divine Revelation of Hell".
