Ephemera: A Collection of Poetry

Oxford Languages defines the plural noun ephemera as "things that exist or are used or enjoyed for a short time." The term is often used to refer to items such as ticket stubs, newspaper clippings, or postcards. These items are all made with the intent to inevitably be discarded, yet it is distinctly human to hold on to such things. We often use postcards from loved ones as bookmarks or paste ticket stubs into scrapbooks. We cut out newspaper clippings and stash them in old shoe boxes on shelves in our closets. My definition of ephemera expands beyond the confines of material objects, embracing that intangible things, including life itself, were all made to be enjoyed briefly in the grand scheme of time. Memories, thoughts, and feelings are all ephemera, and just as with tangible things, it is human to keep them tucked away in our brain folds for safe keeping, or possibly to put them on a page. This collection is a self-exploration of learning that nothing lasts forever, and despite this, choosing to live life anyway. By the end, hopefully everyone will have something to take away and hold on to, even if only for a short while.
