an empowering and practical book

Enough Blood Shed provides many opportunities for activism and ways of implementing changes, be they very large or small. It is true that reality is providing little hope for a world without peace. Mary-Wynne Ashford knows this only too well after her tireless campaign against nuclear arms. The small stories that she and Guy Dauncey included in this book are in turn inspiring and informative. The wealth of useful links and suggested exercises make this an ideal workbook for teachers or groups interested in doing something to get closer to a more peaceful world. Oh, and there is ample mention of demanding truth from media, classrooms, and each other.

A 'must' for any who would do more than dream of peace.

Is war inevitable? ENOUGH BLOOD SHED: 101 SOLUTIONS TO VIOLENCE, TERROR AND WAR thinks not - and it provides an invaluable compendium of solutions for every sector of society, individuals to schools to media to cities and communities. It doesn't just provide plans - it pairs these ideas with nonviolent success stories for diffusing all kinds of volatile situations. A 'must' for any who would do more than dream of peace. Diane C. A prescription for a more peaceful world

In a world surrounded with violence at various levels, it's easy to feel helpless and resigned about one's ability to change anything. However, despite all the doom and gloom, there are numerous examples of positive changes taking place in small steps all around us. World peace is too important to be left only to the politicians and the generals. The responsibility of individuals, families and community not to accept the state of the world is important. As Mahatma Gandhi said, "We must be the change we wish to see in the world." Dr. Ashford provides many concrete examples of ordinary people whose courage, wisdom and actions are bringing about important changes. "Enough Blood Shed" is a prescription for the small but practical steps we can take to help turn the tide of terror and hate that has been pushed on our TV screens and newspapers as inevitable and an incurable disease. This book, written by an eminent physician, a leading peace activist and a mother, is easy to read and an inspiration for us. Dr. Khursheed Ahmed Hamilton, ON, Canada

Balancing our diet

Every single day those of us who watch the world can easily drown in blood and misery. We erupt over breakfast in anger at the injustice imposed on the weak by the strong. Our hope ebbs, our energy is drained, our feeling of being able to contribute dwindles. Partly this is because our news diet is unbalanced. We hear about the horrors, but not about the glorious, creative, courageous, outrageous ways that people find to make the world more peaceful. Mary-Wynne Ashford, bless her heart, has redressed this imbalance. She has searched the world for the stories we need to inspire us, to learn from, as we try to work as intelligently as possible to reweave the torn web of life.

People Worth Listening To

This is a book for skeptics and cynics and most of all for people who complain that no one ever offers solutions for all the problems the world faces. Well nuclear war is a big problem - an overwhelmng problem that many of us like to push to the more abstract back shelves of our brains because to contemplate the consequences of nuclear war is beyond imagining for most of us. However - the people who must grapple with imagining the consequences are the world's doctors because if any of us are left after nuclear warfare it is the doctors who will have to clean up the mess. And that's another reason for paying attention to this book. The primary author is a physician and longtime activist involved with two anti-nuke physician groups. And what she's done is put together a compendium of ideas and essays by a wide assortment of people worth reading - not a flaky thinker among them. I can see the book being used as a tool for discussion in a variety of community and educational settings. If communication is the beginning of understanding, then this book offers much in the way of ideas and examples of peace-making and peace-work, communicated well. Personally I keep it at hand, to dip into when I am feeling the need for some inspiration.... and hope. I recommend it without reservation.
