During spring 2015, Room 2 students read and discussed over ten books written by Roald Dahl. They used his children's stories to inform their understanding of the elements of fiction, including character, setting, and plot, as well as to get a sense of his style of writing and the illustrations of Quentin Blake. Throughout the process, students documented story components in order to look for trends across his work. They found several characteristics that make it unique, including his use of children as protagonists and adults as antagonists, imaginative vocabulary, and inspiration drawn from his own life. In addition to the elements of fiction, students sought to include some of Dahl's characteristics in each of their own stories, which were published together as an anthology for sale on Amazon.
