If you are looking to gain an insight in to the world of art, the techniques involved, what constitutes art, composition, aesthetics etc. then you could do a lot worse than tracking down a copy of this book. My library of art books is turning into a fairly comprehensive collection. Hence this book sat on the shelf unread. This evening I cracked it open and found it to be one of the best books on art appreciation I've read. The writing style flows well, there isn't any of the highbrow turgid style favoured by many other authors. The examples chosen complement the text well. Unfortunately the images are b & w so on occasion I found myself delving in to other books for colour reproductions. The book comprises of 4 sections: A) materials and techniques - covers painting, sculpture, drawings, architecture and prints. b) Organisation and arrangement - what constutes a well composed composition and what tricks of the trade does the artist employ? c) Impact - what affects the impact of a painting to the viewer? Size, familiarity with subject, realism, abstract, quality. d) Style - the look of the painting, is it influenced by the period in which it was painted, the individual style? Well worth tracking down a second hand copy. 100% Recommended. If anyone has this book and knows of a better book on the subject please let me know.
