This textbook is on usage. It discusses communication process in its simplest form, grammatical structures, basic elements of grammar such as word classes, subject-verb agreement, verb tense-emphasising that there should be consistency in the use of verb tenses for appropriateness in usage. In particular, the book explains that the verb has three properties namely, it expresses tense, voice and mood. The book further explains developing writing skills, beginning with challenges in distinguishing between words and sounds, and gives the principles in narrative and expository writings, writing of articles, writing minutes of meetings, letter writing and ends with the skills in answering comprehension and summary exercises, including figurative language, phrases and clauses, synonyms and antonyms. Exercises together with their answers are simply provided in the appendix. The completion of this textbook interestingly contains the mechanics or the rules in written language, including capitalisation, punctuation, and spelling; along with vocabulary and spelling, and some aspects of linguistics. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mr. Samuel Tamba was born on 9th September, 1959 in Kangama, Kissi Teng Chiefdom, Kailahun District, Eastern Region of Sierra Leone. He studied at Njala University- Bo Campus in 2005/2006 and had an M.A in Descriptive and Applied Linguistics, Njala University college from 1990-1994 and had a B.A Ed in Geography/Linguistics, Bo Teachers' college from 1981-1984 and had Teachers' Certificate, Pendembu Vocational Secondary school from 1974-1980 and Education Committee School, Kangama from 1967-1974. Samuel was appointed first Coordinator, Kailahun Distance Education Centre, 2020, promoted to Principal Lecturer in 2019, and Senior Lecturer in 2022 at University level. Samuel lectured Language Arts, Communication Skills, Phonetics, and Methodology at the Bunumbu Teachers' College, Kenema from 1998-2001, lectured the same courses and Language Studies at the Eastern Polytechnic from 2001-2021 until the institution was transformed to the Eastern Technical University of Sierra Leone in 2021. Samuel also taught at the Ahmadiyya Secondary School in Kenema from 1994-1998, Saint Paul's Primary School, Kenema from 1988-1990, Saint Charles Lwanga Primary School from 1986-1988 and the Seventh Day Adventist Primary School, Kenema from 1984-1986. He is a Catholic Christian, married to Alice Mbalu Tamba (nee-Kargbo), and has three children.
