This memoir is an account of adventure and misadventure during the eighteen years that Verbow Akidd spent teaching English as a Foreign Language abroad. It is based on diary entries from the time and from memory. It is written from the author's perspective. The real names of people have all been changed to the character names as found within the story. A number of locations and institutional names have also been changed. Starting with his return to the U.K. in early 2017, the story then goes back to the beginning of the adventure in 1998, as Verbow commences his English-teaching career in western Türkiye. From that point on, there is a series of jobs in various overseas destinations during the period. Birth, marriage, death, love, lust, friendship, humour, conflict, joy and terror are just some of the themes found within the ten chapters that make up the story.
