This book is an excellent reference for anyone involved in real world machine design. Although some of the material is dated, this book covers many of the more advanced concepts in fatigue, buckling, creep and plasticity of metals. It is one of very few text that covers prestressing beyond the Mickey Mouse material usually presented in university textbooks. Each chapter is organized by design tasking from material selection, estimating complex stress states and the design tradeoff of using alternatives to metals. In each case, the information is in depth. I have luckily purchased my third copy of this book. In the last 30 years, I have lost two copies to two generations of recent graduates who discover upon entering the real world, that they need the information in this book which is never provided in a software user's manual or standard engineering texts.
