Well Thought Out, Clearly Written, Recommended

The author, a senior fellow and director of the Project on the Middle East Peace Process at the Washington Institute, argues that the current Israeli withdrawal from Gaza offers a true opportunity for peacemaking between the Palestinians and the Israelis. He says, and I believe correctly, that the rest of the world, including the United States should be willing and able to help in this process. The courage being shown by the Israeli Government in withdrawing from Gaza is remarkable. As evidenced by yesterday's soldier getting on the bus and deliberately murdering four Arabs, there is a fundamentalist (or perhaps zealot is a better word) fringe group in Israel that is as dedicated to war as is the HAMAS organization in Gaza. All that we isolated individuals can do is hope that the crazy's on both sides don't take over the asylum, and be ready to help through the UN or directly as needed. Just a bit more peace in the Middle East would make so much sense. Mr. Makovsky's book is well thought out, well presented, and I hope the appropriate people in our own Government are thinking along the same lines. Well worth reading.
