Enemy of Art is an expose of the negative effects of ideas upon art through the centuries and culminating in the 20th Century. This book is the first ever to delve into art criticism. The Greeks were the first to discuss art, but criticism was invented by Leon Alberti in the early 15th Century. He made no inroads with artist during his lifetime, but his ideas had some effects on Medici art patrons. Then other intellectuals, lead the painter Georgio Vasari, became critics. During the following centuries a few additional ideas were added to criticism. The thesis of the book is that not only was it irrelevant to art, but over time it gained power and did real damage to art. The book offers a simple solution( the only viable one) to end the displacement of art by ideas, which continues today. It will be attacked as anti-intellectual by some, but the readers will decide whether this is so or not.
