Gardeners who seek an up-to-date, authoritative guide to the wealth of garden-worthy ferns available today will find none better than Sue Olsen. Drawing from four decades of experience as a fern specialist, Olsen leads the reader through every genus with horticultural merit, focusing primarily on the temperate species but also including tropical ones. In this comprehensive reference, Olsen presents succinct descriptions, habitat information, and cultural recommendations for more than 960 ferns, accompanied by 700 color photographs. Early chapters focus on ferns in history, as well as on cultivation, propagation, and structure. A series of appendices highlights qualities that will enable gardeners to further refine their choices, such as which species will tolerate dry shade, boggy conditions, strong sunlight, or other special conditions. Rounding out the volume are useful lists (with contact information) of places to see and purchase ferns.
We recently put in a fern garden at our house and now are enjoying fabulous reference material in this book. It is filled with color photographs and detailed information about identifying and growing garden ferns. No one should be without this book, whether they be gardeners or nature enthusiasts who enjoy being able to identify the wild things they see around them. As a matter of fact, we had a wild fern coming up on our property and with the help of this book, we were finally able to identify it. Sure, we can all find information on the web about ferns or just about any other topic, but there is really nothing that can compare to actually holding such a treasure of a book in your hands. Don't hesitate to buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

I received this book for Christmas from a friend. I found it to be such a great reference that I purchased for her for her birthday. Needless to say, she is as thrilled with it as I am. Excellent color photography and covers most ferns that even the more ardent fern collector might wish to learn about. If I had to chose 1 from my 5-6 fern books, this would be it.

Information on the individual ferns are detailed enough for fern selection consideration for your garden. Photos taken are fantastically clear. The only small defect is that commonly used ferns such as Angiopteris and Cyathea cannot be found in this book.
Excellent .

The photogrsphy is the best I've seen in books about ferns making it easy to use for identifying ferns. The descriptions are thorough and include necessary information for growing most of the ferns.

Although not comprehensive Sue Olsen's encyclopedia of garden ferns certainly is one of the most complete volumes on this subject. Good descriptions, interesting background information, generally very clear and to the point photography enabling identification of species at first glance.
