Encyclopedia of Bulawayo

An Enyclopedia of Bulawayo, the second largest city in Zimbabwe, which largely dates from 1893 when it was established at the end of the First Matabele War near the location of King Lobengula's capital. It emerged initially as the largest settlement in Southern Rhodesia, only being surpassed by Salisbury (now Harare) in the 1940s.

The city developed into a major industrial centre during the 1950s, accentuated after U.D.I. when international sanctions on Rhodesia saw Bulawayo being the focus of a small manufacturing economic base, adding to its role as an agricultural and mining centre. For many years, especially when train travel flourished, its position on one of the major tourist routes to the Victoria Falls led to many visitors going to the town.

This book covers some of the people and institutions in Bulawayo, and events which affected and were connected with the city, as well as showing the part that the city has played in Southern Rhodesia / Rhodesia / Zimbabwe.
