Encountering Cultures is a composition reader that explores issues of language and culture, domestic cultural diversity, and global cultural diversity with an unprecedented range if reading, authors, and viewpoints. The premise of the second edition, like the first, is that increasing cultural diversity in North America can best be understood in a global, context; the forth-three 'Brief Encounters' and fifty-nine full-length selections emphasize interactions across cultural boundaries of all types, both at home and abroad. The new thematic arrangement of reading and the enhanced editorial apparatus offer a comprehensive view of cultural issues and facilitate a critical thinking approach.
Having lived abroad, I thought only certain sections of this book would be interesting to me. However, the point of the book is to reveal a multitude of perspectives, and I found all worthy of consideration. Selections are educational, humorous, descriptive, and some mildly disturbing, all which lead the reader to introspective self-evaluation. Some made me proud and happy to be American, some made me feel that we are materialistic, spoiled and greedy. My conclusion is that we are all individuals who are influenced by our culture but should not be limited by it. This book broadens our possibilities.
Very nice!

Containing tens of the best articles written by the best writers, this book "Encountering Cultures-Reading and Writing in a Changing World" has a great range of selections/collections. The book has been assigned as our textbook in the fourth year at college. I was looking around in the school bookshop someday and I found this book; I bought it right away for I thought it was quite a nice book to read. One year later, I became a senior and I found the book I bought a year ago was the one assigned to us to read! It's not too hard to read, I like it!
