I read this book when I was in seventh or eighth grade, and really enjoyed it. Saying that, however, I feel I should also mention that I was (and still am) a huge literature nerd. Enchanter's Glass is based on the epic poem The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser, who was a contemporary of Shakespeare. The poem, which spans about six books, is not exactly something that a 10-14-year-old would be familiar with in the way that Susan Whitcher obviously is. After reading this book, I read parts of The Faerie Queene, which shed light on many of the more allegorical aspects of this book. While some might find this book somewhat esoteric in its themes, I personally like the fact that Whitcher attempted to bring fairly advanced literature and literary theory into the YA market. Condensing the complex allegories of Spenser into a relatively short novel, as well as the allegorical story of her own creation, is daunting. Another reviewer stated that this is the sort of book you either like or you don't, and I tend to agree. If you like complicated symbolism, allegory and actively connecting one strange motif after another, then this book is for you. If you want a simple read, maybe choose something else.
Great, but you need some background

Whitcher's book Enchaner's Glass is a fun read for anyone looking for some fantasy and magic, but to really appreciate the book, one must have a little background about Edmund Spenser and his Faerie Queene. Without this information, it is hard to understand the complex allegorical situations that take place in the Enchanter's Glass.
Great! I loved it.
