Book Overview

En Province is a novel written by the renowned American author, Henry James. The story revolves around the life of an American painter named Christopher Newman, who travels to France to explore the country's art and culture. He meets a young French widow, Claire de Cintr, and falls in love with her. However, her aristocratic family disapproves of their relationship, and the couple faces numerous obstacles in their pursuit of happiness. As Newman navigates the complexities of French society, he encounters several other characters, including Claire's brother, Urbain, and her mother, Madame de Bellegarde. The novel explores themes of love, class, and cultural differences, as well as the clash between American and European values.En Province is a masterful work of fiction, showcasing James' skillful prose and insightful commentary on human nature. It is a must-read for anyone interested in 19th-century literature, French culture, or the works of Henry James.Poitiers covers a large space, and is as crooked and straggling as you please; but these advantages are not accompanied with any very salient features or any great wealth of architecture. Although there are few picturesque houses, however, there are two or three curious old churches. Notre Dame La Grande, in the market-place, a small Romanesque structure of the twelfth century, has a most interesting and venerable exterior. Composed, like all the churches of Poitiers, of a light brown stone with a yellowish tinge, it is covered with primitive but ingenious sculptures, and is really an impressive monument. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
