This should be the story of a set of twins, born in 1908, but it is not. It becomes the story of Emily's quest to find her lost twin, Charlotte. This description may be from another edition of this product.
When I was a young girl, I loved stories of historical fiction, such as the Little House on the Prairie and Anne of Green Gables series. Thus, I can imagine middle-school girls fascinated by this story of twin girls who were born in 1908, orphaned at a young age, sent to live with unknown relatives, and then separated. The story moves on with Emily's life, as she grows up, gets married, has a child, and continues to search for her dear sister. Although Emily's life is often filled with tragedy following the loss of some very dear family members, it is also a story of triumph as Emily achieves her dreams of becoming a teacher, finding new love, and reuniting with her twin. Girls of all ages will be able to relate to Emily's quest for her identity, while enjoying an incredible story.
Emily's Journey, In Search of Self

"Emily's Quest" is a remarkable story. Cora Alyce Seaman writes with feeling as she takes the reader back in time to the early years of the twentieth century and escorts them through to the mid-century point. She reflects on the life of Emily Whitfield Carmichael. While still a young child Emily's parents both become fatal victims of a flu epidemic. Soon after this Emily is separated from her twin sister. Charlotte is faced with the realization that she has become the victim of her circumstances. Emily's journey begins in a coal mining town in Pennsylvania. After high school, as a new bride she is transported to a small mountain community in the hills of Eastern Kentucky. Her young husband, Eustis Carmichael, becomes a navy career man stationed in the Great Lakes region. After six years of marriage Emily is finally able to join him to make a home together. The book is historical fiction, biographical in approach, however it could be Cora Seaman's own story. It is written with a depth of understanding that recounts the hardships and struggles Emily faced. Seaman writes of the economic challenges of the era, technical progress, dysfunctional family relationships, friendships, faith, and loneliness. The book is divided into two parts. In part two Emily is reunited with her twin sister Charlotte. The United States joined the allied forces in the World War II. Eustis was sent to the South Pacific. Seaman highlights many significant events of the era. The years pass quickly as Emily met the challenge of dealing with the death of family members, raised her son, and completed the requirements for becoming a teacher. Emily continued to pursue her quest to discover who she really was right up to the surprising dramatic conclusion recounted in the epilogue. "Emily's Quest" gives the reader a nostalgic glimpse into the first half of the Twentieth century as well as hope and inspiration for meeting whatever hurdles they might be facing. This is a book about rising above your circumstances. Cora Alyce Seaman has written a fictional memoir that has the elements of information, drama, and motivation. An enjoyable story.
