Emily Gardner is a successful real estate developer living in, Tulsa, Oklahoma. She has been successful in many areas of her life, but not in relationships. One day she runs into a friend, and while discussing relationship and children, her friend suggests that since she mentors college aged ladies, she could adopt a young lady. Emily gets placed with Miriam, a 13 year old lady, originally from Guatemala, whose family died after coming to the US. They quickly realize how much they have in common and feel this relationship was meant to be. Miriam not only struggles with the usual teen issues, like bullying and fitting in, but with the loss of her family and her new found family, and what it all means.
