Set in contemporary Seattle, Emerald City begins with Benison Behrenreich, a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) from the privileged Bellevue suburbs. His recruitment to play for the fictional Myriadal College basketball team is a farce; the College's coaches have been bribed by Benison's father, Marc, whose sign-language interpreting company is on the rise, thanks to its ties to a Queens crime syndicate (and a scheme to defraud the government of millions). What the Behrenreichs don't know is that the syndicate's kingpin, Stephan Klimnick, is interested in a lot more than raking in illegal cash. He's using Marc's profits to grow an ancient drug-crop in Guatemala, one with the power to alter the fate of the Behrenreichs, the emerald city, and-at least according to Klimnick-the world.
