This book is a support to amazing people doing amazing things. Since we are working alongside the neurodivergent, or are fortunate enough to be wired that way ourselves, children must be invited into framing neurodiversity with strength and acceptance.
Why Embracing Neurodiversity? The beauty of humankind lies in its diversity. Neurodiversity is essential to our collective growth and connection to one another. We need to be with people who think, perceive, and contribute differently than us to build a strong, and resilient community. In a landscape of cultural norms of "fitting in," and people-pleasing, we can lose sight of that.
We can learn to "go with" our neurology instead of fighting it. If we fight the way we are, we fight for our gifts and the goodness we bring others. Learning about our body and brain needs teaches us how to grow our tolerance for what feels hard. If we fight our neurology, we are sure to lose, and as we learn about the strengths, we lean into them and can enjoy them much more.
The intention of this resource is adding to the "why" - to our humanenss, or work as an educator or helper. We are all doing beautiful things to the best of our ability. When we understand "the why," we see collaboration instead of being confused. This invites compassion and solutions, supporting meaningful inclusion. Including everyone grows a sense of belonging in the classroom and beyond. So, how can we help youth understand their why, and allow them to shift to love themselves?
