Embrace the Absurd with Grace: How Stoicism and Absurdism Can Help Us Handle the Absurdity of Our Existence

Philosophers throughout history have grappled with the absurd-the dissonance between our search for meaning and the universe's apparent indifference. In my opinion, two schools of thought, Stoicism and Absurdism, have emerged as powerful responses to this condition. While they originate from different contexts and times, they both offer tools for navigating life's uncertainties. Yet, each philosophy comes with its limitations.

It's here that I propose a reconciliation: Stoic Absurdism. This philosophy seeks to blend the wisdom of the Stoics-their emphasis on virtue, self-discipline, and acceptance-with the liberating insights of the Absurdists, who encourage us to embrace life's inherent lack of meaning with defiance and creativity. Together, I think, these perspectives can guide us toward a life of purpose, authenticity, and resilience in the face of the absurd.

Stoic Absurdism is not about escaping life's difficulties. It's about leaning into them, finding beauty in the struggle, and choosing to live fully in the face of the absurd. It's about imagining Sisyphus happy, not because his task is easy but because he embraces it with grace and determination.

Find Your Own Meaning/Purpose

This book was so worth buying brand new!!! He does a beautiful job describing both philosophies and his personal experiences mixed in help to illustrate how/why these philosophies are essential if you are struggling with purpose/meaning, fear, expectations, not knowing the answers and being OK with it, and so much more. Every chapter ends with: practical exercises, five things to consider, and reflection questions. He literally gives you a blueprint - so if you're worried about where to start, he's got you covered. I cannot recommend this book enough. It validated things I'd already started doing and am more consciously working on now, reinforced why I go with actionable plans rather than setting goals, and gave me a better understanding of why I do/don't struggle with certain things. I also really appreciated how much he stressed PERSPECTIVE and REFRAMING. Embracing these two philosophies in conjunction is not a sprint - it's a long-haul process that requires work and effort. BUT IT IS SO WORTH IT!! My only complaint is he's a little too repetitive, but I think most of it works because he's building on what he's already written and it comes across more as reinforcement/reiteration. And with repetition, comes different ways of wording the same thing - that alone can make something click that wasn't before. Plus, after many years of active resistance, I am finally convinced that I need to start a gratitude journal. Thanks, Mr Morrison, for bringing it up a few times.
