Porter Goodman met his wife, Sophie, while attending Appalachian State University. Both ROTC graduates, they spend the majority of their careers away from each other on deployments. When they are together, Sophie's demeanor is quick to anger and arguments. Porter sees it as the stress of deployments, until the truth about Sophie's adoption comes to light. She cannot help her anger due to her disease, but Porter cannot bring himself to tell her of his cancer. Despite the anger and hardship, Porter still loves Sophie and tries to keep things from upsetting her now that she has to contend with Huntington's disease. Porter's cancer gets worse and worse while his new job of teaching does the same. Life's stress drives them apart, to where Porter emails Sophie the entirety of how his life was affected in the hopes that she will understand he is a human being too.
