This is one of the best books I have ever read, and it sits in a place of honor on my bookshelf. The life story of a poet who was born poor in the early part of the last century, realized she was a lesbian and created an amazing life for herself in San Francisco and then in the hills of California. She published the first "out" book of poetry which included love poetry clearly from a woman to a woman, and went on to fight the McCarthy-era witch hunts and help found an "unintentional" community of poets and artists called "Druid Heights" in California. Not only is she an important part of lesbian and feminist history, but she ought to be a national treasure. Fascinating, inspiring, beautiful, poetic. Read this book. You'll be glad you did, and you'll find yourself reaching for it again.
