Elizabeth Stewart was born in the wilds of Maine in 1836. When tragedy struck at the age of three, she and her mother soon moved to Boston, her mother's childhood home. There they lived with her uncle, a wealthy businessman. Elizabeth wanted for nothing. At the age of nineteen, having graduated from one of the best finishing schools, she needed to decide what to do with her life. She longed for a challenge. She had often wondered about her father, a man she hardly remembered. One morning while reading the local newspaper, she discovered an advertisement for a school teacher in Bradley, Maine, her birthplace. Was this an omen? Elizabeth applied for the position and soon found herself on an adventure like she had never experienced.
