Elizabeth Bennet's Impertinent Letter: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

NEW! IMPROVED! (And if I could email an apology to everyone who got the previous version, I would.)

After rejecting Fitzwilliam Darcy's arrogant proposal at Rosings, Elizabeth Bennet challenges him in an impertinent letter. Very quickly, her incautious correspondence is connected (directly or tangentially) to scandals, scoundrels, four weddings and a minor murder, an almost-elopement, an abduction, a seduction, a counterfeit wedding, and a compromise that is foiled by a goat during a ball at Netherfield. By the end of the tale, all the characters are united with their appropriate match, and Colonel Fitzwilliam-who serves as a cupid for Darcy and an investigator for the army-finds the love of his life.

The Author's Gentle Caution: Prospective Readers, I wrote the story that told itself to me. Of the five "romances" in this story (I don't count Charlotte and Collins), one is a romantic friendship (to use an 18th and 19th century term), and four are straight (to use a term coined in 1941). There are no explicit sex scenes; indeed, romantic friendships were not necessarily sexual. However, some readers have objected to the discreetly written (in my opinion) romantic friendship. Such friendships between persons of the same sex have been documented throughout human history, including two mentioned in the Bible (Ruth and Naomi, and King David and Jonathan), Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, the Ladies of Llangollen (contemporaries of Jane Austen), and Abraham Lincoln, who defeated a rebellion against the United States.

If you are uncomfortable with the facts of history and the human yearning to make an emotional connection (even if it is "non-heteronormative," 1991), you might prefer a different book. Life is too short to read books that annoy you, to watch movies that bore you, and to drink inferior wine.
