The rich cultural heritage of India comes alive in this elegant story about Ravi and his Indian grandfather who travels to the West for a visit. As Ravi listens to the stories of his family's country of origin, immigrant children of any nationality will relate to the cross-cultural ties in his family. And all children will be fascinated to learn about the Indian culture, animals and peoples through informative fact pages here.
I teach 6th grade ELA and World Geography. I initially intended to use this book because of the author's rich use of similes but after reading it I fell in love with it's tidbits of information about India. I teach a big unit on India in my geography class and this book helped introduce my students to many of the words and vocabulary that they learn during the unit. The pictures are also beautiful.

I used this book to introduce my 3rd grade art class to India and Indian culture. It could be used for younger children, but it does a good job of giving the basic flavor of India to the reader. It's very quick and simple, and the illustrations are playful and fun.
