This book tries to lay the groundwork for a critical Yoruba philosophy. The main objective is to define, clarify and provide meanings to concepts of philosophical value and interest in the Yoruba culture, and to explore the ways and manners by which the Yoruba people, from time past, perceived the world around them and live in it.

Taking into account the various philosophical orientations that exist among the people, the book calls into question the indiscriminate generalizations that many scholars frequently make about the beliefs and cultural practices of the people, and concludes that most views expressed by the people originated from different individuals at different stages in Yoruba history. This conclusion was made possible through the exploration of Yoruba intellectual history from antiquity to the present.

Additionally, the book delves deeply into metaphysics, employing valuable traditional abstract concepts to espouse its own philosophy, which the author believes would aid in the development and advancement of a refined Yoruba philosophical thought system.
