Historical novel about the Gaul campaign, narrating the friendship between a Roman centurion and Vercingetorix, Gallic prisoner, whose execution was one of the most notorious in Julius Ceasar's glorious years.

Publius Sextius Baculus, first centurion of the 12th Roman legion and hero of Julius Caesar's Gaul campaign, is relieved of his post after loosing several fingers at the battle of Atuatuca and returns to the capital, where he is supposed to guard the treasure of Rome. However, the long record of brawls Publius has build up since his return forces the young magistrate of the Republic that commands him to assign him with a different task: he is to be jailer of the Gallic leader Vercingetorix, apprehended at the battle of Alesia.

This hellish warlord will remain imprisoned for six years in the Tullianum, in Mamertine prison, until his execution is ordered. During his long captivity, they will develop a close friendship based on mutual respect and their memories of war.
