Winner, Mauricio Achar Prize

"A book possessed of a captivating prose and hypnotic rhythm. The Left Side of the Sun is a patient, contemplative, beautiful novel that is both an accurate and faithful portrait of a real person and a stunning work of fiction."-Fernanda Melchor, Ala de Ventura and Emiliano Monge, Judging Panel, Mauricio Achar Prize / Random House 2022.

Cristian Lagunas examines the complex figure of Yukio Mishima, one of the most fascinating authors in the history of Japanese literature. In 1957, at the age of 32, Mishima traveled to New York City and Mexico to immerse himself in the world of gay tourism and escape a past, when he wrote his first novel and was known by a different name: Hiraoka Kimitake.

The Left Side of the Sun sheds light on that past and its impact on its protagonist's life and career. On the streets of Tokyo, the young Kimitake discovers both ambition and desire. His relationship with Sito, a hibakusha (a survivor of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan), torments him for a decade, providing the background for his current trip.

Writing in the style of a Bildungsroman, Lagunas recreates the private biography of a man addicted to beauty, obsessed with self-destruction, and desperate to reinvent himself.
