I decided to purchase this book after seeing it on Tricycle's list of recommended beginner books on Buddhism. I've been meditating on and off for over a decade, but have recently been working on committing myself to regular practice, and was looking for some inspiration and guidance. Although I will admit I didn't read the whole book, I found Eight Steps to Happiness repetitive, dull, and at times, illogical. Then I did some research on the author and found that he is criticized for being a cult leader, and reportedly does not allow his followers to read any text other than his own. This would explain why he repeatedly references his other books throughout this one. I'd recommend looking elsewhere for Buddhist books on cultivating happiness, such as Thich Nhat Hanh's How to Smile.
One of the best books I have ever read

Do not miss out on this beautifully written book by Kelsang Gyatso. The introduction alone could be life changing if you are able to put it's concepts into practice.
